chicago real estate with community gardensHow trendy is your Chicago real estate? Builder.com recently compiled a list of the top 10 lifestyle trends in homes for 2012. While certain trends are things we might take for granted in our homes, some others may surprise you. Here are just a few of the trends highlighted:

Community Gardens
While taking a stroll through your beautiful community garden might be soothing and stress relieving, the Urban Land Institute states that a shared garden can actually bring the community together. Gayle Berens, a senior vice president at the Urban Land Institute, mentioned that the growing and sharing of fresh food is a great use of the vacant land that also promotes a sense of community among members.

Do-It-Yourself
Remodeling?Chicago real estate is a trend that is definitely on the rise. While many are not ready to invest in Chicago new homes, small do-it-yourself projects can polish up your old home or give it some pizzaz.

Single-Level Homes
See ya later, stairs! Of the 10 best-selling plans at this year?s 2012 Builder House Plans, seven of them were single level homes. While this is a great trend for older buyers and active adults, the single level is also catching on with younger families too.

Many Generations, One Roof
According to the Pew Research Center, a whopping 51.4 million Americans were living in a multigenerational home in 2009. While baby boomers who deny moving into assisted living facilities are moving in, so are the kids. Younger adults between the ages of 25 and 34 had the sharpest increase, about 16.8 percent, among people living in multigenerational homes. That number means that about 1.3 million people are moving back in with older relatives.
