Boost for Scottish basketball | News | News and events

Women?s basketball in Scotland is to be boosted through a new programme.

The University has teamed up with basketballscotland to offer a new High Perfomance Basketball Programme for female athletes in 2013-14.

This will be the first high-performance basketball programme for University-aged female athletes in Scotland, giving top players the opportunity to develop their skills while completing their academic studies.

The programme will provide players with a dedicated High Performance Coach, over ten hours of workouts per week, strength and conditioning sessions, mentoring opportunities and flexible study, as well as the opportunity to play in the BUCS competition.

Andy McSweeney, Head of basketballscotland, welcomed the agreement, saying:

?This is one of the most exciting developments I have been involved in during my time at basketballscotland. To create a viable alternative to colleges in the States and Europe right here in Scotland is a huge step forward for the sport.

?I hope that in the not too distant future we can offer similar programmes for our aspiring male athletes and have no doubt that these programmes will ensure higher levels of performance for our aspiring GB athletes as we build towards the Commonwealth Games in 2018.?

Edinburgh caters for 24 of the 26 Olympic sporting disciplines. The University is consistently ranked top 6 in the UK in the British Universities and Colleges Sport League.

We have a long history of our athletes going on to excel in the sporting world, with Olympics successes including Eric Liddell?s 400m gold medal in 1924 and Sir Chris Hoy?s cycling gold medals in 2004, 2008 and 2012.

Alumna Katherine Grainger, Britain?s most successful female rower, also won gold at London 2012, while swimmer Michael Jamieson won silver.

Our sports facilities are among the finest in the UK. We provide bursaries, training and support to help gifted students realise their potential in individual and team sports.

We offer sport-related degree programmes at both undergraduate and postgraduate level, from sport and exercise science to recreation management and coaching.

We are delighted to partner with basketballscotland and add female basketball to the university?s hugely respected and pioneering High Performance Sport Programme. We see real benefit in investing in athletes who will commit to technical improvement in a supported performance culture, while representing the University and striving for success in basketball at national and international level.
