Netanyahu, Lieberman Merge Parties For Ballot - Yeshiva World News

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Thursday he was merging his Likud party with that of his ultra nationalist coalition ally Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman in a hard-right tack ahead of Israel?s Jan. 22 election.

Though the conservative Likud already led opinion polls, its joint list with Lieberman?s Israel Beiteinu (?Israel is Our Home?) could win over wavering voters for a ballot sweep that Netanyahu saw empowering him to push through major policies.

Resuming stalled U.S.- and European-sponsored peace talks with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas is unlikely to be a high priority, however, given the disdain for his authority voiced by Lieberman, a settler in the occupied West Bank.

?In Israel, the prime minister needs a big, cohesive force behind him,? Netanyahu said at a news conference, citing a need to tackle security concerns like Iran?s nuclear programme as well as economic and social problems in Israel.

Running with Lieberman, Netanyahu predicted, would yield ?a clear mandate that will allow me to focus on the main issues, rather than trifles?.

Battered by partisan sniping during his first term as premier in the late 1990s, when Lieberman served as his chief of staff, Netanyahu has since sought broad-based and ideologically binding political alliances.

Lieberman has also called for an overhaul to the fractious political system, where a low threshold of minimum votes allows for a multitude of small special-interest parties in parliament.

?Real reform of governance begins, effectively, today,? the Moldovan-born foreign minister said alongside Netanyahu.

PRIORITIES

A TV poll aired on Monday saw the Likud and Yisrael Beiteinu taking, respectively, 27 and 12 of parliament?s 120 seats, and an eventual new Netanyahu-led coalition commanding 65 seats.

The Likud denied an Israeli media report that Netanyahu and Lieberman planned to rotate the premiership between them in the next government, as the Likud?s Yitzhak Shamir and the dovish Shimon Peres did during their coalition in the 1980s.

Opposition parties decried the alliance, with Zehava Gal-On of the liberal Meretz saying it invited international isolation.

?The prime minister is essentially signalling that he has chosen the extremist, pro-settlement right, that he has chosen to walk in place, not to make progress in the diplomatic process (with the Palestinians),? she told Israel?s Army Radio.

That was echoed by veteran Palestinian negotiator Hanan Ashrawi, who accused Netanyahu of scrapping any prospect for peace in return for a firmer hold on Israel?s national helm.

?Such a dramatic shift to the right will be very costly for both sides, and it will again destroy chances of peace and will further separate issues of justice and Palestinian rights from Israeli politics,? Ashrawi told Reuters.

Netanyahu says he is committed to achieving an accord with the Palestinians, though he disputes their claim on the West Bank and East Jerusalem and has made clear that curbing Iran, as well as Abbas?s armed rival Islamists, is Israel?s core worry.

Defence Minister Ehud Barak last year quit his centre-left Labour party, dumping it from the coalition, to form a more conservative party that dovetailed with Netanyahu?s policies.

Netanyahu further widened the coalition this year by joining forces with the centrist Kadima party, though that partnership soon broke up over the government?s failure to push through a reform of military conscription laws granting exemptions en masse to ultra-Orthodox Jewish seminary students.

Netanyahu might try to address the draft issue again with the help of the secularist Lieberman, given what appears to have been their decision not to inform Shas, the powerful religious party in the coalition, about their merger in advance.

?I was absolutely surprised by this,? the Shas leader Interior Minister Eli Yishai said, anticipating the move could prompt left-leaning and Orthodox parties to form their own blocs.

Sorry, Mira. We've already gotten three submissions for the Second-in-Command. You're still welcome to submit, but I'd prefer it be for one of the regular Contractor positions. If you want to request a role for me to consider tossing in, feel free to ask. From what I see, the character I accepted was submitted right about at the same time as yours. If you want to see if smellie_catt will give up the spot to you or if you can come to an agreement, feel free.

As for epicnukeguy and littlexvamp, I'll send you both PMs in a moment entailing what I would like to request that you change in your character profiles.

Israel's premier vows to build in Jerusalem

JERUSALEM (AP) ? Israel's prime minister vowed Tuesday to continue building in a contested Jerusalem district, just days after European Union criticism of Jewish housing there.

Benjamin Netanyahu was speaking during a visit to Gilo after Israeli approval for the construction of 800 Jewish homes there sparked a sharp condemnation from EU foreign affairs chief Catherine Ashton. She is set to visit Israel on Wednesday.

Israel captured Gilo in the 1967 Mideast war from Jordan. Then it annexed the area to Jerusalem in a move that has not been recognized internationally. The Gilo district is close to Bethlehem in the West Bank.

Netanyahu said Jerusalem is "Israel's eternal capital" during the visit to Gilo and said Israel has every right to build there.

"We have built in Jerusalem, we are building in Jerusalem and we will continue to build in Jerusalem, this is our policy, and I will continue to support building in Jerusalem," Netanyahu said.

During the visit, Jerusalem mayor Nir Barkat thanked Netanyahu for the resources to allow development and growth. "We will continue to build tens of thousands of apartments throughout the city," he said.

The fate of Jerusalem is one of the most emotional issues in long-stalled Israeli-Palestinian peace efforts, because of key sites there that are sacred to Jews, Christians and Muslims.

Palestinians claim the eastern part of Jerusalem as the capital of their future state, along with the West Bank and the Gaza Strip. Israel says east Jerusalem is an inseparable part of its capital, citing biblical and security reasons.

Palestinians are refusing to resume peace talks unless Israel stops building in areas they claim. Israel says all issues, including territorial disputes, must be resolved through negotiations and has frequently called for talks to be restarted.

'Skyfall' Makes World Premiere in London

LONDON -- Daniel Craig and a glittering array of stars including Javier Bardem, Ralph Fiennes, Judi Dench, Ben Whishaw and director Sam Mendes stepped out for the world premiere of Skyfall, the latest in the James Bond franchise, in London on Tuesday.

The royal gala, which benefitted charities to help members of the security services, attracted huge crowds hoping to catch a glimpse of the cast. Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall Camilla Parker-Bowles?also attended the event at the Royal Albert Hall.

Normally one of London's classical music concert destination venues and home to the BBC Proms, the circular-shaped building had been converted to a giant cinema for the evening. The top brass from MGM, Sony and Eon Productions all gathered for the screening, with Royal protocol keeping everything in check.

Prince Charles requested the event's proceeds go to support charities that help members of the three intelligence agencies -- the Secret Intelligence Service, better known as MI6, the Security Service, commonly known as MI5, and the GCHQ signals intelligence agency.

REVIEW: 'Skyfall'

Producer Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson walked the carpet along with writers Neal Purvis, Robert Wade and John Logan. Craig is used to his Bond outings, receiving Prince Charles' seal of approval with both Quantum of Solace and Casino Royale enjoying royal gala status.

After a military brass band played out some of the Bond themes from the past fifty years of the franchise, including You Only Live Twice and Goldfinger, the audience inside was treated to a showreel of clips from all previous 22 outings with actor's Sean Connery and Pierce Brosnan getting the biggest cheers from auditorium before Craig made his appearance.

At that point, the noise rose visibly inside the hall. Then the arrival of the Royal party and the meet-and-greet outside the converted concert hall was beamed in.

Sony Corp. CEO and president Kazuo Hirai and former chief and board member Howard Stringer were among the first to get the Royal handshake before a string of the movie's production team, ending with director Mendes.

Mendes was followed by his actors including Whishaw, Berenice Marlohe, Fiennes, Naomi Harris, Bardem, Dench and finally Craig, with wife Rachel Weisz standing politely behind him.

Wilson and Broccoli took to the stage ahead of the movie saying that since 1964 and the film Goldfinger, the Bond movie premieres had been Royal galas to raise money for charities.

Wilson, to applause, told the audience the evening had raised more than ?300,000 from the sale of tickets and programs for Prince Charles' nominated charity.

Mendes was then brought to the stage by the producers and he thanked everyone for coming declaring it an honor and privilege "and something of a relief" to be standing on stage just ahead of the film's debut.

He noted the two main reasons for "the 50 years of Bond are standing next to me," referencing Broccoli and Wilson.

Mendes then introduced his cast declaring that, as everyone knew, "a director is only as good as his cast."

The biggest cheer from the enthusiastic crowd was again reserved for Craig although the applause for Dench ran the Bond actor close.

"Everyone owns Bond and tonight he belongs to all of you," Mendes said before saying he hoped the crowd enjoyed it and thanking them again.

The Mendes-helmed Skyfall marks Craig's third turn as Bond in the franchise's 23rd installment. He's signed on for the next two films as the British secret agent; MGM and Sony will continue to co-finance and distribute.

The movie "yanks Bond, M and MI6 out of the world of colorful megalomaniacal villains and into the vexing world of shadowy terrorists and cyber warfare,"?THR?chief film critic Todd McCarthy?wrote in his review.

Skyfall will be rolled out by Sony Pictures across British cinemas on Oct. 26 and into most U.S. theaters Nov. 9. The latest installment is due to land in Imax theaters across North America on Nov. 8.

Kansas? Self ready for NCAA to allow paying of college players

? Kansas basketball coach Bill Self used to hold a pretty hard-line stance when it came to the contentious issue of compensating NCAA athletes beyond the traditional parameters of a scholarship.

But every year around the NCAA Tournament, Self began to see a noticeable disconnect. The television revenue dollars continued to pile up, the NCAA collecting billions, while the parents of his players had to cough up four or five figures to follow their kids to tournament sites around the country.

?I used to be totally against it,? Self said. ?I used to be totally against doing anything other than room, board, books, tuition and fees. But I?ve changed. And the landscape has changed also. It was always big business; now it?s huge business.

?And when you?re sending players from the West Coast to East Coast to play sports, to miss more classes, and the schools benefit from that financially, why shouldn?t the people that are responsible for the business, and that would be the student athletes.?

The matter of compensating student-athletes will be just one of many pressing issues discussed when Self plays host to ?A Courtside View? ? a roundtable of some of college basketball?s most important voices and analysts. The upcoming event, which is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Nov. 1 at Crown Toyota Pavilion in Lawrence, will include Self, national writer Mike DeCourcy, ESPN commentators Jay Bilas and Fran Fraschilla, and Kansas City Star college columnist Blair Kerkhoff.

Self said he also expects the group to address issues such as the one-and-done rule, NCAA academic reform and the business side of college athletics, among others. The proceeds from ticket sales will benefit Self?s Assists Foundation.

?It?s a chance to bring some very knowledgeable people in to talk about important issues affecting our sport," Self said.

But it?s likely that the debate over paying college athletes ? and the idea of amateurism in college sports ? will get ample time. Bilas has been an outspoken critic of the NCAA?s convoluted rulebook, suggesting that NCAA athletes should be able to use their name or likeness to earn money from outside channels ? a model similar to that of the Olympics.

Self, meanwhile, joins a growing list of high-profile college coaches who have expressed concern with the current model. Texas football coach Mack Brown and Kentucky basketball coach John Calipari have taken similar public stances.

But change remains slow. Last October, the NCAA passed legislation to provide scholarship athletes an additional $2,000 annually ? a de facto stipend that would give athletes more financial leeway. But months later, the legislation was put on hold when schools offered opposition, expressing concern about the financial burden.

Brown spoke up after the new football playoff system was formalized earlier this year.

?It will be a very lucrative event, and those young people are the ones that make it all happen,? Brown wrote on his Twitter account.

Calipari, meanwhile, has reached further than Self. Earlier this year, he voiced dismay with the NCAA and suggested that a potential stipend should be larger.

"The decisions they make on the $2,000 (expense allowance for student-athletes) ? it should have been $4,000,? Calipari told The Sporting News. ?It?s a stipend. It?s not salary. It?s not pay-for-play. It?s a stipend. It?s expenses. And then schools vote against it. All this stuff piles up to where people are going to say, ?Enough?s enough.??"

Self doesn?t pretend to have perfect solutions. But he does hope the current system begins to address the easier fixes. When Self?s Kansas program advanced to the NCAA title game earlier this year, he estimates that some of his players? families spent as much as $10,000 to travel to the Jayhawks? three NCAA tourney sites ? and two were within driving distance of Lawrence.

?Even if it?s to the point,? Self said, ?where the NCAA paid for the parents of student-athletes to attend bowl games (or) paid for the parents of student athletes to attend an NCAA game. There?s so many things you can do.?

Is Non-Prescription ADHD Medication Use Ever Ethical?

I can't imagine a world where perfectly healthy people feel the need to take addictive stimulants just to help them focus throughout the day.

You joke, but it's a serious problem. We have the fewest number of vacation days of any industrialized country, poor health care, and many of our poorer citizens work north of 50 hour work-weeks, some with two jobs, others balancing college and a full-time job (and still wind up hundreds of thousands in debt from student loans). We are literally working ourselves to death -- obesity rates are skyrocketing, and the average person consumes 2.25 cans of soda per day. Frankly, it's worse for you than smoking -- each of those cans is 130 calories, and then it amps your metabolism and simultaniously acts as a dieretic so your appetite increases. I read something about how the average American consumes something like 2,800 calories per day. My weight and build puts my daily consumption at around 1,500 calories a day... which means the average person consumes 86% more food than I do. And we pack in the stimulants, along with the pounds. Then to top it off, we don't get enough sleep because of our LCD screens, 26 hours of TV a week... our lifestyles are killing us.

Now, I have severe ADHD. I've been tested repeatedly by neuropsychologists, and there is no question I have it. I have to take it just to keep pace with this "Type A with rabies" culture I live in, and it isn't easy. The side effects aren't terribly pleasant either -- shaking, insomnia, anxiety... I can't understand why someone would want to deal with these effects unless they had to. People, strong stimulants aren't fun. They will give you energy, but at a cost -- the candle that burns twice as fast burns half as long. I have to take it, and it's expensive. And I don't take it on the weekends, or vacation, etc. I take as little as I can functionally get away with.

Please guys, I'm telling this to you as someone with the attention span of -- oh look, a kitty -- life is too short. Don't take medication you don't need. Please. It isn't worth it. You're young, and stupid, and your body can tolerate it now... but you're wearing it out faster, and it's for stupid silly shit that twenty years from now, you won't care about. Stop being obedient slaves and putting in 60 hour work weeks. Stop working yourself into an early grave. Go out, see friends, see family. Leave work in the office... don't take it home.

Drugs without side effects are like unicorns -- they don't exist. They all have risks. I have a cousin right now who's a pain pill junkie. They were prescribed by her doctor. She was told they were safe, and the addiction crept up on her slowly. Now, she's on parole for five years after getting so doped up she didn't know her head from her ass -- all on legally prescribed drugs at the doses prescribed by competent physicians -- and she did something stupid. And the thing is, she got out and went right back to doing it. Stimulants do the same thing to some people -- everyone has their drug of choice. Everyone. Not everyone has found it yet.

Now I'm not against recreational drugs; It's your choice. And if tomorrow they decided to hand out bottles of Adderall and Ritalin next to the aspirin, I wouldn't complain. It's your life, it's your body, it's your choice. But please people, think. Think long and hard about whether finishing that TPS report is really worth the extra minutes off your life, the high blood pressure, the sleepless nights, and the cold sweat when you're so amped you feel like there's a strange presence in the room with you, watching. Just ask yourself that. Choose well.

Default Tricks ? Cost-free Internet marketing Systems

Many experts recognize the role of affiliate marketing in online marketing strategies. It adds value to the business domain and maximizes the potential revenues. There are two parties involved with Affiliate Marketing.

The first party is a website owner who lends his web pages or business domain for advertisements of products and services owned by an online merchant, the second party. Affiliate marketing drives traffic aimed at your website and widens your marketplace.

As an online online marketing strategy, it uses a company that is tasked to generate visitors. As a business owner or business owner, you use a service or product to earn visits from potential clients, who eventually become an affirmative buyer.

There are three methods to use AM. The first is the Pay-per-click. This method can earn money to a website owner each time a potential buyer exits the website by clicking the link that leads to the site from the merchant. Depending on the agreed price, a certain amount is then deposited towards the account of the affiliate marketer.

The second type is called Pay-per-lead. If the potential client registers at the website of the merchant caused by an advertisement on the website owner, a certain amount is deposited towards the account of the affiliate marketer.

The third type is the Pay-per-sale, which makes a deposit to the account of the affiliate whenever a sale is made resulting from the advertisement on the website of the affiliate.

Many website owners use AM as part of their online marketing methods. They benefit from this without actually doing anything.

It is also good for online merchants. By using affiliate marketing, his products or providers get free unlimited exposure to many web surfers, 805 of whom tend to be affirmative buyers.

While some website owners use this marketing approach to supplement their income, there are countless business executives who bank on affiliate marketing as the primary source of their income.

They have capitalized onto it by engaging in this particular marketing approach with as many merchants as possible.
Moreover, online marketing strategies through affiliate marketing increase the visibility of your website.

It is also simple to find things on the web. Almost every online company has many affiliate programs that have links to sites where one can see thousand of products and services.

There is no time limit in affiliate marketing. You can start anytime. It also does not really require interaction with clients.

Everything is electronically organized. Your task is to invite potential buyers to your affiliate page and the rest will be taken care of by the business domain or website.

If you do not have a service or product to market, you do not have to worry about it. Online marketing strategies do not limit their scope to those who own a website or even niche.

However, you may need to understand about the products or services that you are marketing. Understand its nature and benefits; this makes selling simpler.

Before using an online marketing strategy, it is advisable that you do a research onto it. When it comes to internet affiliate marketing, it is helpful when you make things clear between you and also the merchants. Do everything in smooth business arrangement.

Online marketing strategies seek to increase the visibility of your website. It drives traffic by bringing in the right customers to your website. AM is among its many methods.

Better way to shed water: Lubricated, nanotextured surfaces boost performance of condensers in power and desalination plants

ScienceDaily (Oct. 22, 2012) ? Condensers are a crucial part of today's power generation systems: About 80 percent of all the world's powerplants use them to turn steam back to water after it comes out of the turbines that turn generators. They are also a key element in desalination plants, a fast-growing contributor to the world's supply of fresh water. Now, a new surface architecture designed by researchers at MIT holds the promise of significantly boosting the performance of such condensers.

The research is described in a paper just published online in the journal ACS Nano by MIT postdoc Sushant Anand; Kripa Varanasi, the Doherty Associate Professor of Ocean Utilization; and graduate student Adam Paxson, postdoc Rajeev Dhiman and research affiliate Dave Smith, all of Varanasi's research group at MIT.

The key to the improved hydrophobic (water-shedding) surface is a combination of microscopic patterning -- a surface covered with tiny bumps or posts just 10 micrometers (millionths of a meter) across, about the size of a red blood cell -- and a coating of a lubricant, such as oil. The tiny spaces between the posts hold the oil in place through capillary action, the researchers found.

The team discovered that droplets of water condensing on this surface moved 10,000 times faster than on surfaces with just the hydrophobic patterning. The speed of this droplet motion is key to allowing the droplets to fall from the surface so that new ones can form, increasing the efficiency of heat transfer in a powerplant condenser, or the rate of water production in a desalination plant.

With this new treatment, "drops can glide on the surface," Varanasi says, floating like pucks on an air-hockey table and looking like hovering UFOs -- a behavior Varanasi says he has never seen in more than a decade of work on hydrophobic surfaces. "These are just crazy velocities."

The amount of lubricant required is minimal: It forms a thin coating, and is securely pinned in place by the posts. Any lubricant that is lost is easily replaced from a small reservoir at the edge of the surface. The lubricant can be designed to have such low vapor pressure that, Varanasi says, "You can even put it in a vacuum, and it won't evaporate."

Another advantage of the new system is that it doesn't depend on any particular configuration of the tiny textures on the surface, as long as they have about the right dimensions. "It can be manufactured easily," Varanasi says. After the surface is textured, the material can be mechanically dipped in the lubricant and pulled out; most of the lubricant simply drains off, and "only the liquid in the cavities is held in by capillary forces," Anand says. Because the coating is so thin, he says, it only takes about a quarter- to a half-teaspoon of lubricant to coat a square yard of the material. The lubricant can also protect the underlying metal surface from corrosion.

Varanasi plans further research to quantify exactly how much improvement is possible by using the new technique in powerplants. Because steam-powered turbines are ubiquitous in the world's fossil-fuel powerplants, he says, "even if it saves 1 percent, that's huge" in its potential impact on global emissions of greenhouse gases.

The new approach works with a wide variety of surface textures and lubricants, the researchers say; they plan to focus ongoing research on finding optimal combinations for cost and durability. "There's a lot of science in how you design these liquids and textures," Varanasi says.

Daniel Beysens, research director of the Physics and Mechanics of Heterogeneous Media Laboratory at ESPCI in Paris, says the concept behind using a lubricant liquid trapped by a nanopatterned surface, is "simple and beautiful. The drops will nucleate and then slide down quite easily. And it works!"

That further research will be aided by a new technique Varanasi has developed in collaboration with researchers including Konrad Rykaczewski, an MIT research scientist currently based at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) in Gaithersberg, Md., along with John Henry Scott and Marlon Walker of NIST and Trevan Landin of FEI Company. That technique is described in a separate paper also just published in ACS Nano.

For the first time, this new technique obtains direct, detailed images of the interface between a surface and a liquid, such as droplets that condense on it. Normally, that interface -- the key to understanding wetting and water-shedding processes -- is hidden from view by the droplets themselves, Varanasi explains, so most analysis has relied on computer modeling. In the new process, droplets are rapidly frozen in place on the surface, sliced in cross-section with an ion beam, and then imaged using a scanning electron microscope.

"The method relies on preserving the geometry of the samples through rapid freezing in liquid-nitrogen slush at minus 210 degrees Celsius [minus 346 degrees Fahrenheit]," Rykaczewski says. "The freezing rate is so fast (about 20,000 degrees Celsius per second) that water and other liquids do not crystalize, and their geometry is preserved."

The technique could be used to study many different interactions between liquids or gases and solid surfaces, Varanasi says. "It's a completely new technique. For the first time, we're able to see these details of these surfaces."

The enhanced condensation research received funding from the National Science Foundation (NSF), the Masdar-MIT Energy Initiative program, and the MIT Deshpande Center. The direct imaging research used NIST facilities, with funding from an NSF grant and the Dupont-MIT Alliance.

Relationship Retreats: Warriors to Soul Mates | Fatherhood Channel

Hans Petersen, VA staff writer

?I wish you could have been present to see the tears, bonding and joy, the healing for so many.?

VA Chaplain Dick Millspaugh is talking about the Veterans and loved ones who attend relationship-bonding retreats.

The Department of Veterans Affairs is trying a new path to caring for and healing the nation?s wounded Veterans. Now, in addition to repairing their damaged bodies and minds, VA is going one step further and helping to repair their crumbling intimate relationships.

Veteran Marriage RetreatsThe retreats are conducted by VA chaplains, social workers, psychologists, and nurses. They are PAIRS-certified instructors, teaching better communication skills, relationship skills, and emotional literacy skills to couples. PAIRS stands for: Practical Application of Intimate Relationship Skills.

?Research shows that 70 percent of our combat Veterans are experiencing marital problems,? said VA Chaplain Ron Craddock. ?Twenty percent of them decide to divorce before they even return from theatre. This is staggering. The toll on the individual Veteran is staggering. The toll on his family is staggering.?

PAIRS Veteran Marriage Retreats? They taught us how to listen to each other,? say Michelle, wife of an Army Veteran. ?When that happens, it brings you closer together. It feels really, really good.?

Chaplain Millspaugh has dozens of quotes like that.

The VA retreats, called ?From Warrior to Soul Mate,? are based on a program created by the nonprofit PAIRS Foundation which, for over a quarter century, has provided educational programs that deliver practical skills to strengthen marriages and families.

The retreats take place in a group setting, with instructors, often over a Friday evening, Saturday and Sunday, or in several class sessions.

Instructors are skilled, perceptive, effective facilitators from various disciplines.
They have been trained and certified.

?How can one measure the lives saved??

PAIRS Veteran Marriage Retreats

The retreats of 30-60 people are conducted with an open invitation for participants to ask questions and offer contributions from their unique life experiences. After introductions, instructors outline ground rules for discussion, and then explore an understanding of how learning and relationships evolve. Soon participants are introduced to practical communication tools and invited to practice those skills with their partners.

An example of one of the sessions at a weekend retreat:

PAIRS Veteran Marriage RetreatsPAIRS Relationship Roadmap ? The conversation begins with an exploration of the root causes of pain and pleasure, considering symptoms and signs of happiness and unhappiness and their connection to the deprivation or fulfillment of biologically-based needs, including the human need for bonding.

Here?s a complete overview of what happens at the retreats and a look at the syllabus.

The vision to move the ?From Warrior to Soul Mate? initiative from a local effort to a VA nationwide program has been an outstanding success. Since 2011:

  • Nine ?Train the Trainer? workshops have certified over 400 PAIRS facilitators at VA locations around the country.
  • Multiple enrichment retreats have been held at 26 different sites to the benefit of hundreds of couples.
  • Partnerships have been set up with the faith community, the American Red Cross, the Border Patrol and organizations serving Active Duty personnel.

Participants? evaluations revealed that many Vets and their partners felt that ?everyone in the military should be required to attend? such retreats, that the retreats helped with the problems of multiple deployments, PTSD, and other challenges of military service and transition.

?I would like to say thank you for PAIRS couples retreat. It helped my husband and I see that our relationship is still worth fighting for.?

In a lengthy report filled with important statistics, Chaplain Millspaugh reflected, ?How can one measure the lives literally saved from suicide, the children not touched by divorce, the costs not incurred by stress borne illnesses or homelessness??

From Warrior to Soul Mate has been a unique and important program to help so many of America?s Veterans strengthen the health of their families.

Defining A Growth Hacker: Building Growth Into Your Team ...

In this series titled ?Defining a growth hacker,? I will be exploring the meaning and practical application of growth hacking through a number of interviews with prominent growth hackers. This is the fourth post of the series. The previous posts are as follows: common characteristics here, growth hacking?s impact on marketing here, and impact on product here.

Paul Graham reminded the startup community that it is in the business of growth. ?A startup is a company designed to grow fast,? Graham writes.

Though growing a business is a universal desire, implementing growth is unique to the product, the market, and the company. Nabeel Hyatt, venture partner at Spark Capital, said that there is no single way to grow a company. Execution is a startup?s fingerprint: distinctive and hard to replicate.

A growth hacker?s role is not static but constantly adapting to the organization?s needs. Building growth into a team starts with adopting a culture of growth, recruiting the right team, and implementing with the right corporate mindset.

Adopting a culture of growth

Valuing ?growth? is more than just filling a position. It operates like a fundamental value or a ?creed? that the rest of the organization uses to prioritize decisions. ?Growth is not just the concept of ?how do I market this??. Rather, it is a company belief and value,? said Hiten Shah, co-founder of KISSmetrics.

From day one, company culture is being fastened and formed. Inserting growth creed at a later point in time requires more energy and time to implement, which slows down learning. ?At the founder level, a growth hacker designs product around inherent distribution and sets a data-driven culture,? said Matt Humphrey, co-founder of Homerun. ?This is probably the most important phase of a company.?

Adopting a growth creed at any point in time requires trust in the process and continuous internal advocacy. When it comes to growth, results require patience. The founder is the best person to integrate the creed into the organization, allocate resources and establish the organization?s vision on growth.

?Growth has to be part of the culture from day one,? said Jim Young, co-founder of HotorNot and Perceptual Networks. ?It is much harder to staple on a growth team when there is an entrenched development process that is not as metrics oriented or fast-paced. A growth hacker works best as a founder, since they will be able to establish the culture for growth from the very beginning.?

Recruiting the right team: a growth hacker

Implementing growth depends on the company?s maturity and resource accessibility. For an early stage company, a growth hacker is typically a strong generalist with a good product intuition due to the need to fill multiple roles.

?At first, a company needs to have a good product intuition with clever hooks,? said Mike Greenfield, co-founder of Circle of Moms and 500 Startups Growth Hacker-in-Residence. ?Later on, the quantitative part of growth starts to matter.?

With a small data set and highly variable user behavior, a growth hacker in the early stage is hustling every channel. Jesse Farmer, co-founder of Everlane, said that scalable growth in the early stage is a challenge: ?Early on it?s distribution ?ber alles and getting to the first few thousand users. Sometimes that?s hard to do through pure engineering due to the lack of scale. Growth hackers try to bootstrap through other avenues, such as press and inbound marketing.?

In this stage, having coding skills as a growth hacker pays off in a steeper learning curve and faster iterations. ?It is always better to be an engineer whether you are in product, a CEO, in marketing or in data. Engineering is a multiplier effect in speed,? Farmer said.

But this confluence of skills is rare. ?Earlier on, it is best to have those coding skillsets,? Shah said. ?But those people are unicorns. Most good growth people are great marketers and product people. Being a coder is not necessary to be a good growth hacker.?

Though a growth mindset should be adopted into the culture from day one and baked into the product, growth hacking is primarily a post product-market fit enterprise. Growth is an optimization problem. ?Most of the tools of trade don?t apply until after product-market fit and initial traction,? Hyatt said. ?Most great growth hacks are optimization problems.?

Recruiting the right team: growth teams

As a product surpasses early adopters, growth compounds in complexity and difficulty. ?The first stage of growth usually involves scrappy techniques to raise a round and prove the idea,? Humphrey said. ?The next phase gets more complicated with monetization and user accounting. This is when a startup sets itself out from the pack as a rocket-ship.?

Growing beyond early adopters presents a new set of growth challenges that requires specialization and more minds on the task of growth. A single, generalist growth hacker can be ineffective as a product gains mass adoption. Andy Johns, growth product manager at Quora, said, ?You need to build a team focused on growth, not just an individual,? said Johns.
A growth team is different from a growth hacker in that it?s the specialization of a growth hacker?s role. ?Different stages of company growth requires different types of growth teams,? Shah said. ?Growth hacking is not the same thing as a growth team. A growth hacker is a generalist who can attack several channels effectively. Growth teams are a group of specialized growth hackers.?

Though a growth team retains most of the mantra of a growth hacker, growing into a larger team naturally reduces agility and some of the hacker (?black hat?) nature. ?Comparing a growth teams to a growth hacker is like comparing marital arts to mixed martial arts. Both are fighters but on the ground, in a growth at all costs environment, you need a mixed martial artist,? Farmer said.

Implementation

Implementing growth touches every part of a company. Growth hackers and growth teams do not isolate themselves. Growth is a systematic endeavor. ?Growth is the confluence of hiring, organization building, analytics, data science, design, engineering, Internet marketing, and a trained mentality,? Johns said.

Growth hackers and growth teams work very closely in a product role across an organization to make an impact as quickly as possible. ?The role of the product manager and growth hacker is starting to collide,? Danielle Morrill, CEO of Referly said. ?Traditionally the product manager has been the gatekeeper of what gets built next, but the growth hacker looks at daily metrics and wants to move a lot faster.?

A creative yet systematic view of the product helps foresee how small changes can have a big impact. ?Growth hacking is about levers, not guessing,? Shah said. ?If you make one tweak, you should know or estimate the impact it will make in your product, directly and indirectly.?

Implementing growth is not always bright and sunny optimism because failure is essential element of growth. ?You don?t need to fall in love with your first idea. This is an objective science. You are either right or wrong,? Hyatt said. Growth is a learning process. Trust in the growth team is fundamental to success because not every concept works.

There are several misunderstandings around growth. The buzz on ?growth hacking? has intimated the misconception of simple overnight successes and a ?LEGO? conceptualization of conquering growth challenges. ?Growth is not sexy,? Johns said. Implementing growth is not easy. It requires continuous and proactive advocacy without realizing gains until a later date. Growth hackers are validated on a post-hoc basis.

However, when a growth hacker does get it right, they are right in a big way.

In my next post, I will discuss common myths and misconceptions about a growth hacker.

Aaron is currently a growth hacker in U.S. presidential politics and leads the growth committee for the Growth Hacker?s Conference. You can follow him on Twitter and his blog.
