As the saying goes, ?those that live in glass houses shouldn?t throw stones,? and after a recent rant by Florida Congressman Allen West, we feel safe in extending that advice to ?those that drive Hummers shouldn?t complain about gas prices.?
Fuel prices are on the rise throughout the country, prompting West, a Republican from Florida?s 22nd district, to take to the virtual pages of Facebook to voice his displeasure with President Obama?s energy policies. Although most Americans likely share West?s concerns about rising fuel prices, the Congressman lost all sympathy when he mentioned what kind of vehicle he drives.
?Here is the bottom line, last night it took 70 dollars to fill the tank of my 2008 H3 Hummer, what is it costing you? What does it cost the President to fill his gas tank??
Hummer has one of the poorest environmental images on the planet ? if not the worst ? which was a driving factor in General Motors? decision to close the brand in 2010. In fact, Hummer?s negative environmental image played a role in China?s decision to block the brand?s sale to ?Sichuan Tengzhong Heavy Industrial Machinery Company?Ltd.
According to the EPA, West?s H3 is rated at 14mpg in the city and 18mpg on the highway, netting a 15mpg combined rating. Not only are those figures poor for a mid-size SUV, but those ratings would be bad for a full-size truck.
If West was truly concerned about fuel prices (and wanted to stay within the GM family) he could stop complaining on Facebook and trade-in his H3 on a 23mpg combined Chevy Equinox. Heck, West would even save at the pump if he purchased a 638 horsepower Corvette ZR1 (17mpg combined).
