Dropbox 2.2 for iOS simplifies photo viewing, supports Dropbox for Business

Dropbox 22 for iOS simplifies photo sharing, supports Dropbox for Business

Android-based Dropbox users got a crack at an even more photo-centric interface back in January; it's now the iOS crowd's turn to play. Dropbox 2.2 for their platform makes it easier for them to see their photos, organize them into albums and share them with others. The corporate set will also want the update now that it permits the single sign-ons that make Dropbox for Business tick. Version 2.2 isn't the most dramatic update we've seen, but it should go some distance toward pleasing both shutterbugs and the suits.

Asia stocks down, China manufacturing growth slows

BANGKOK (AP) ? Asian stock markets fell Wednesday in holiday-thinned trading after the pace of China's manufacturing growth slowed in April, raising fears of a weaker recovery in the world's second-largest economy.

The China Federation of Logistics and Purchasing said its purchasing managers' index fell to 50.6 in April from 50.9 in March on a 100-point scale on which readings above 50 indicate an expansion.

The industry group quoted economist Zhang Lijun as saying that steadily declining export orders and other indicators portend a slight decline in economic growth.

Analysts said the data slightly undershot expectations. Most had been expecting a reading of 50.7.

"Although conditions in Asia's industrial sector have improved, they still remain weak by historic standards," said Daniel Martin of Capital Economics in Singapore.

Japan's Nikkei 225 index fell 0.4 percent to 13,811.55 as the yen gained strength against the dollar. Australia's S&P/ASX 200 dropped 0.4 percent to 5,170.80 as investors took profits off the table after the market hit a five-year high Tuesday. New Zealand's benchmark fell while Indonesia rose.

Many stock markets were closed for May Day holidays, including those in Hong Kong, mainland China, South Korea, Singapore and Taiwan.

Among individual stocks, Japan's Sharp Corp. fell 5.6 percent. Kyodo News agency reported that the struggling electronics maker was likely to report a larger-than-expected net loss for fiscal 2012 on May 14. Australia's OZ Minerals fell 4 percent.

U.S. stocks finished modestly higher Tuesday, giving the Standard & Poor's 500 index another record close and its sixth straight month of gains.

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 21.05 points, or 0.1 percent, to 14,839.80. The S&P 500 rose 0.3 percent to 1,597.57. The Nasdaq composite index rose 0.7 percent to 3,328.79.

Benchmark oil for June delivery was down 43 cents to $93.03 per barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract fell $1.04 to finish at $93.46 per barrel on the Nymex on Tuesday.

In currencies, the euro rose to $1.3161 from $1.3158 late Tuesday in New York. The dollar fell to 97.29 yen from 97.51 yen.

HTC One HDR microphone disappears from spec sheet after Nokia injunction (updated)

HTC One HDR Mic dropped from spec sheet after Nokia case

We've wondered what HTC would do after a Dutch court banned it from using HDR Microphones in its oft-delayed One handset, and now we know. It looks like the company has now nixed references to the Nokia-developed component on its website, raising the possibility that the handsets currently being manufactured have HTC's "improved" microphones rather than the original STMicroelectronics unit on board. None of this should affect phones that are already on the market, but we've reached out to HTC to find out what this means for future One owners and will let you know more when we do.

[Thanks, Ted]

Update: HTC has reiterated its position (after the break) saying that the company is entitled to use its remaining supplies of STM's HDR Microphones until they run out.

Hezbollah says opposition won't topple Assad with force

BEIRUT (Reuters) - Hezbollah leader Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah said on Tuesday that Syrian rebels fighting the forces of President Bashar al-Assad would not be able to topple him using force.

Nasrallah, a staunch ally of Assad, said in a televised speech from an undisclosed location that Syria's allies in the region and the world would not allow it to fall "into the hands of Americans, Israel and (Sunni) extremists".

"The battle is long ... We tell you (Syrian rebels) that you will not be able to bring this regime down through military means," he said.

Syrian rebels have accused Hezbollah of fighting alongside the forces of Assad. The group has formally denied these accusation and said it was only fighting to protect Shi'ite villages along the border.

But Nasrallah on Tuesday gave the strongest indication so far that his group was involved in fighting inside the country by admitting that his fighters had been killed in Syria. However, reports of the death toll were "exaggerated", he added.

He also left the door open to greater participation in the conflict "if the situation escalates more."

Assad is facing a revolt against his rule which has spilled into civil war, pitting the majority Sunnis against his own sect, the Alawite, an offshoot of Shi'ite Islam.

The war, which has claimed more than 70,000 lives, has exacerbated sectarian tensions throughout the region, with hardline Sunni Islamists dominating the armed opposition and Shi'ite Iran indicating it would not allow Assad to fall.

Fighting between Shi'ite militants backed by Hezbollah and the Syrian rebels in border villages have raged in the past weeks, threatening to drag Lebanon into the Syrian conflict.

The border area is a key supply line for Syrian rebels, making it important for Hezbollah to stop rebels from taking over Shi'ite villages there that would bring them close to Hermel, one of the group's strongholds.

The group has said more than 30,000 Shi'ite Lebanese live in the affected villages and that it was helping to defend them against the rebels.

"We say it clearly, we will not leave the Lebanese in the Qusair rural area vulnerable to attack by armed groups. Who ever needs help, we will not hesitate to give it."
