With Boston Bruins goalie Tim?Thomas back in the nation's capital, Washington Capitals fans weren't going to let him forget his skipped trip to the White House.

At Game 3 of the Bruins-Capitals playoff series Monday night, several spectators showed up with pictures of President Barack Obama and signs taunting Thomas. In January, he didn't show up when the rest of the Bruins were invited to the Stanley Cup champions' traditional visit to the president's office.

Thomas, born in Michigan, said at the time he believes the federal government "has grown out of control."

Most of the Obama signs were displayed by fans sitting near the glass behind the net Thomas defended in the first and third periods of Monday's game.

What happened in Monday night's game? Thomas made 29 saves and ignored the taunting from fans.?

Suddenly, Bruins-Capitals turned into Flyers-Penguins, replete with scraps and all sorts of scrums ? not to mention quite a bit of offense thrown in.

From the high stick that knocked off Boston captain Zdeno Chara's helmet, to the cross-check to Rich Peverley's face at game's end that earned a match penalty for Washington's Nicklas Backstrom, and all sorts of mayhem in between, Game 3 "was kind of like a rugby game," Capitals coach Dale Hunter said.

"The only thing that's disappointing for me personally is that this is the third time in three games our player has been cross-checked in the face. ... You hope that those things don't get out of hand," Bruins coach Claude Julien said. "Somebody else, not us, has to deal with that."

Thanks to Chara, the Bruins came out on top.

Chara scored the tiebreaking goal during 4-on-4 play with less than 2 minutes left, and the reigning Stanley Cup champion Bruins finally solved playoff rookie goalie Braden Holtby, beating the Capitals 4-3 Monday night to take a 2-1 lead in the first-round Eastern Conference series.

"It's getting more emotional," Chara said. "Players are more involved. It's starting to be more and more physical."

The 6-foot-9 owner of a 100-plus mph slap shot was involved in pretty much every key play: He was in the penalty box when Alexander Semin scored the game's first goal for Washington; he had two assists; and his final shot from the right circle appeared to get deflected by Capitals defenseman Roman Hamrlik ? "Lucky goal," Hunter said ? on its way past Holtby.

"It was nice to see him get that. He got clipped there in the head; a little frustrated from the non-call. He had a penalty early in the game for I thought just holding his own," Julien said. "So he's been good at not getting frustrated at those things. Because he stays with it, he ends up getting rewarded with a big goal."

Game 4 is Thursday in Washington, before the best-of-seven series moves back to Boston for Game 5 on Saturday.

Rob Riggle to Host 2012 ESPY Awards

The ESPY Awards have tracked down one of the fewest and one of the proudest men in Hollywood to serve as host of this year's ceremony.

Former Marine/Daily Show correspondent/Hangover co-star Rob Riggle has been tapped to takeover for Seth Meyers, who emceed this sports entertainment event for the past two years.

Other ESPY host have included Samuel Jackson (1999, 2001, 2002, and 2009) Lance Armstrong (2006), Justin Timberlake (2008).

"Why me? Straight up sex appeal," Riggle said in a statement. "I know guys like Justin Timberlake and Seth Meyers are sexy... What can I say, I'm just another link in that sexy chain. I couldn't be more honored to be the host of the ESPYS! I just hope they let me do my Karate demo!"

The ESPYs will air July 11 at 9 p.m. on ESPN.

Microsoft announces Q3 2012 earnings: $17.41 billion in revenue, $6.37 billion income

Microsoft has announced its earnings for the third quarter of its fiscal year this afternoon, and it's reporting some record numbers that beat expectations: a six percent increase year-over-year to $17.41 billion in revenue and a 12 percent increase to $6.37 billion in operating income. Breaking things down by division, that includes $4.57 billion in revenue from Server & Tools, $5.81 billion from the Business Division (which includes Office), $4.62 billion from Windows and Windows Live, and $707 million from Online Services -- all increases from between four to 14 percent. The one division seeing a big drop is Entertainment & Devices, which dipped a hefty 16 percent year-over-year to $1.62 billion in revenue -- something Microsoft blames on a "soft gaming console market," though it is happy to note that the Xbox 360 remains the top console in the US for the 15th consecutive month. Notably absent is any mention of Windows Phone, though perhaps we'll hear more about it on the company's earnings call in just under an hour.

Update: Microsoft didn't exactly have a ton of new info to share on the Windows Phone front on its earnings call, noting only that it remains pleased with its Nokia partnership and the launch of the Lumia 900 on AT&T, and that it is "working to bring Windows Phone to more people."

I'm still a WIP ? Speaking of Words, Quilts, and Life

1) My blog ? I finally updated?the ?about me? page?and changed the name of my blog. This is the third name, but that?s okay. It needs to grow with me. It?s now titled, ?Speaking of Words, Quilts, and Life.? In reviewing the collection of posts I?ve made,? most of my posts somehow address creativity in my life through writing, quilting, or even parenting, so I decided to expand the title. My goal for this blog is to write, consistently, twice and week for an audience, whoever they may be. So far, I feel good about what I?ve done here, and I?m also okay with not having a laser focus on my ?content.? If I was trying to monetize this, that might be a problem, but I?m not, so I feel perfectly comfortable writing about my writing, my creative process, my quilting, or even my kids if I feel like it.

2) My novel ? My goal for the year was to finish my first draft by April 15. I figured that is a national deadline of sorts, so I?d just join the party.?Alas, I didn?t make it. My word count goal was 90,000 words, and I?m happy to say I have met and?surpassed that goal by several thousand words, but I?m still not done telling the dang story!? I think I have about six scenes left to write which could be anywhere from 6000-10,000 more words.? At this point, I have the end written and 90% of the middle, I just have to get the two tied together. I?m almost there, and I hope to have a first, really rough draft done in two or three weeks. I?ve decided not to beat myself up over this as I?d rather start my revisions knowing that I have to cut rather than feeling like I have a lot I need to add.??For me,?cutting and tightening up language during revision?is much easier than writing more.

3) My?quilts -?this part of my life has become a big zero. I haven?t touched a needle or thread in several months, other than to sew a button on a pair of?pants last week, but that doesn?t really count. I wanted to sew this past weekend but ended up cranking out several thousand words on my novel, so?my fabric continued its lonely existence. Summer vacation is coming, however. I just need to keep that in mind!

4) WhereTeensWrite ? Another of my goals this year is to start a website for teen writers.? I am happy to say that this is in the works.? It will be a community for teen writers to share their writing, get feedback, and take online creative writing classes. I?ve had several students ?consulting? with me on it, and we?re all pretty excited though it probably won?t be live for a couple of months.? When it is, you?will be able to find it at whereteenswrite.com. ?That whole summer vacation thing really?needs to happen, so I have some time to dedicate to this project too!

5) This is not a goal, just proof that I?m still a ?work in progress.? I?ve been blogging for a year and I just discovered that WordPress has a Handy Blog Scheduling Feature! I?m sure this tool has been available since I started blogging, but somehow it escaped my notice, so I?ll share for those of you who haven?t found it yet either.?If, like me, you are busy and sometimes aren?t on the computer to post on your regular schedule, there is a solution.? The next time you finish a post, click the ?edit? button next to ?Publish Immediately? above the big blue ?publish? button.? You can then?schedule it to go out whenever you want it to and WordPress does the rest. How nice are they? This has made my life as a woman who works full time, has two teens, and tries to post regularly much easier, and I wish I had discovered it a year ago. Oh well, live and learn.

Is corn syrup killing the honeybees? (+video)

A trio of recent studies faults a common family of corn pesticides for disorienting honeybees, potentially leading to colony collapse disorder. The German chemical company Bayer, which manufactures the pesticides, disagrees. ?

Since 2006, something awfully strange has been happening to North America's commercial beehives. Beekeepers are finding that many of the boxed hives ranged throughout their apiaries have been inexplicably abandoned by worker bees. These ghost-hives typically have ample stores of honey and pollen, and hold gestating colony broods, sometimes even a lone queen.

This phenomenon is called Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD), and two papers published recently in the journal Science say that it is correlated with the presence of a ubiquitous class of insecticide called neonicotinoids. A newer study published in the Bulletin of Insectology suggests that this insecticide is introduced into bee colonies through, strangely enough, high-fructose corn syrup.

The insecticide was developed by Bayer AG, the German chemical and pharmaceutical giant most recognized for its original brand of aspirin. Today, the $53 billion company has released a rebuttal to the suggested link between neonicotinoids and Colony Collapse Disorder.

The population of feral honeybees in the US has been steadily decreasing for the past half-century, and is now almost nonexistent. In the same timescale, commercial honeybees experienced a shallower decline in population. However, since 2006, they have started rapidly disappearing in North America and Europe. Many scientists agree that the confluence of factors that drove population decline before 2006 is still in effect, but that something probably changed in light of the new rash of colony collapses.

Identifying the causes of CCD is a complex proposition, but the disorder's symptoms and effects are quite simple. It usually occurs when worker bees first depart their hives to forage, in winter or early spring. Then they don't return. Their hives typically have an active queen, ample food, and a developing brood ? not exactly the home a bee would abandon under normal circumstances. Many scientists have since suggested that pesticides may disorient bees or affect their memory, making them unable to navigate home.

Chensheng Lu, an environmental scientist at Harvard and the lead author on the Bulletin of Insectology paper, was curious as to how the insecticide may be introduced into the colony, and decided to investigate high-fructose corn syrup, which for the past decade has been used by beekeepers to supplement hives that have been decanted of honey. Much of the US corn crop is treated with neonicotinoids, and so trace amounts of the insecticides can often be found in the sugary syrup.

Lu and colleagues designed an experiment that would expose hives to concentrations ranging from 20 to 400 parts per billion. Within 4 months, 15 of the 16 experimental hives had been emptied by what appeared to be CCD, according to the researchers.

As more studies are published on this subject, the link between neonicontinoids and CCD may become more apparent. In this case, Bayer AG could only be held indirectly accountable, as it is the beekeepers who are substituting the inexpensive syrup for bee honey, thereby introducing the pesticide.

Earlier today Bayer released a statement that criticized the Harvard study, asserting that the sample size was too small to be statistically significant and that the "authors ignored the scientific consensus that bee health is impaired by multiple factors, including inadequate diet, pests and parasites such as the varroa mite, microbial diseases, mismanaged colonies, and loss of genetic diversity."

These are not unreasonable criticisms. Though the study authors certainly didn't "ignore" a "scientific consensus" on the multiple factors that could cause CCD. They simply investigated one of them. Nonetheless, scientists are still puzzled by the many possible causes of the disorder. They're also concerned, and for good reason.

The common honeybee is widely recognized as the most important insect pollinator. They're extremely versatile, able to collect both nectar and pollen and to transport it. They are easily managed by beekeepers, and live year-round, which means they will service a wide variety of plants. They're also fecund; one simple colony can consist of one queen, a few hundred drones and roughly 80,000 workers. There is no realistic scenario in which we could operate our mass-scale farms without them.

Bayer's concerns about the studies are not all that surprising considering the company's financial interests. But if more research confirms that its neonicotinoids are afflicting the commercial honeybee population, then they are threatening an enterprise on which Bayer crucially depends: agriculture itself.
